About Us


Overview
Welcome to Women In Distress Organization (WIDO), A dedicated non-governmental organization (NGO) committed to advancing the cause of women’s empowerment, equality, and protection. Established in 2000 by a group of african women based in the Netherlands. WIDO stands at the forefront of the global movement towards eliminating gender-based violence (GBV), discrimination, and upholding human rights.
Vision
Our vision is to create a just and equitable society where women’s rights are respected, their well-being is prioritized, empowered to achieve their fullest potential, and able to contribute fully to social, economic, and environmental stability.
Mission
In pursuit of this vision, our mission is to address the multifaceted challenges faced by women, champion women’s rights, eliminate gender-based violence, ensure peace and security, and drive economic empowerment. We work towards the holistic upliftment of women, aiming to foster a society where every woman is empowered, safe, and has equal access to opportunities.

Recognition
- WIDO proudly holds Special Consultative Status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), allowing us to engage in discussions and contribute to policy-making processes at the international level.
- In 2022, we were elected to the 4th Permanent General Assembly of the Economic Social and Cultural Council of the African Union (AU ECOSOCC) through a competitive process. These recognitions underscore our credibility and influence in advocating for women's rights on the global stage.
